Department of General Forestry PhD program
Admission t this PhD programme is basically governed by the UOG senate provisioning in Article 70 and 71. Students that qualify for the admission in the Forest and livelihood PhD program shall generally possess a master’s degree in the specified areas with a cumulative ‘very good ‘ and ‘excellent’ grade for their masters’ thesis. However, priority will be given for those with the best academic performance during their post‐graduate studies. The quality of the candidates’ research synopsis will have high value in the selection procedure as it gives a clue for the capacity of the candidate in doing his/her research project. Besides the entrance exams, work experience after graduation will also be considered as a plus for the selection of candidates.
1. Applicants with MSc in Forestry:
Are directly academically qualified for admission to the PhD Programme. However, depending on their specialization or courses taken in undergraduate and masters’ studies, they might be recommended to take fulfillment courses in forestry and rural development programs.
2. Applicants with MSc in Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, and Rural Sociology:
Are admitted after an individual academic assessment to check the relevance of the course taken in their BSc and MSc studies. To be academically qualified the applicants in these categories need to take a minimum of 6‐9 credit hours of courses in the forestry, Rural development and related MSc program.
3. Applicants with MSc/ MA in Natural resource management, Natural Resource Economics, land resources management:
Are admitted after an individual academic assessment to check the relevance of the course taken in their BSc and MSc studies. To be academically qualified the applicants in these categories need to take a minimum of 6‐9 credit hours of courses in the forestry, Rural development and related MSc program.
4. Selection and prioritization of applicants
Eligible applications are assessed using the following selection criteria:
a) Academic excellence
b) Recommendations from current employer (1) and academic supervisors (1)
c) Relevant work experiences ( Minimum of 1 year experience after MSc )
d) Personal motivation
e) Entrance exam (Oral)
f) Synopsis of their PhD proposal g) Publication
The following weights on each criterion are used:
a) Academic excellence (20%)
b) Recommendations from employer and academics (5%)
c) Work experiences (10%)
d) Publication (10%)
e) Personal motivation (10%)
f) Entrance exam (15%)
g) Synopsis (30%)
The assessment of admission shall be made by the DGC, endorsed by the Department and the college AC. In the long run the PhD programme might be linked with research projects. In that case the calls shall be specific to the subjects linked with the agreed project ideas. This shall
contribute to the success of the program for easy access to research funding and supervisors from research institutions.
