About the Program

This Forest and Livelihood PhD program aims to produce high level forestry researchers, development sector leaders and academicians who are capable to independently undertake research, development and teaching assignments in the private and public sectors, for which a broad knowledge and skill of research is required. It is a four‐year program with 12 Credit hours course work and supervised original research thesis (30 credit hours) work.

Through the production of highly qualified researchers, academicians and development leaders as well as research based technologies and institutional innovations, the Forest and Livelihood PhD program aims at contributing to sustainable forest based local, regional and national economic development as well as to the accomplishment of the CRGE strategies of Ethiopia.

The Forest and Livelihood PhD curriculum

· Acquaint scholars with indepth and comprehensive knowledge in forest socioeconomics, forest product commercialization and livelihood contributions, institutional aspects

· Enable scholars to apply their technical knowledge to analysis and solve problems in forestry and forest based rural development

· Enable scholars to design and implement effective technical and institutional innovations for sustainable resource utilization

· Equip graduates with scientific methodological approaches and skills to conduct and communicate researches in their respective specialization both independently and in interdisciplinary team

· Enable graduates to master diverse and complex tasks in their prospective research, development, academic and business carriers and professions and forestry related investments

· Create synergy among education, research and development in the forestry sector


Admission requirements

  • MSC in the specified areas (Forestry, Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, Rural Sociology, Natural resource management, Natural Resource Economics, land resources management)- background other than forestry will take 6‐9 cr. Hr Forestry bridging courses

  • Eligible applications are assessed using the following selection criteria:

a) Academic excellence

b) Recommendations from current employer (1) and academic supervisors (1)

c) Relevant work experiences ( Minimum of 1 year experience after MSc )

d) Personal motivation

e) Entrance exam (Oral)

f) Synopsis of their PhD proposal

g) Publication


 

Graduation requirements

Eligibility for graduation is governed by the provision set by the UOG senate legislation. The

requirements among others include:

a) Successful completion of a minimum of 12 Credit hours of course work.

b) Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct research independently: completion of PhD

thesis and successful defense

c) a candidate needs to obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.00 without ‘C’ grade and below

d) A minimum grade of C (pass/satisfactory) for the PhD thesis and defense
