About the Program

The ultimate aim of the program is to improve crop productivity, quality and production in a sustainable way thereby contributing to improvement of the livelihood of the people and thereby the development of the country by providing learners with a breadth of current knowledge on agronomic principles and practices to the solution of problems in crop production and resource management. Such a program seeks to produce competent professionals who are equipped with both academic and practical knowledge and skills in managing the crop production and management; and conducting various research and extension activities which can contribute to the development of the country and ensuring food security and self-sufficiency.Thus, the program is expected to produce highly qualified and competent human resource for research, education, policy advice, and development.

The specific objectives of the program are:

  • To produce adequate and well-trained agronomists that will regionally, nationally and internationally contribute to generation, dissemination and adoption of improved crop production technologies.

  • To cater well-trained, preferred, high caliber and competent agronomists who are capable to compete and win the job market.

  • To enable the students understand and comprehend problems in crop production and seek solutions through exposure to research, extension and management.

  • To enable students to conduct relevant research in agronomy problems related to crop production and management so as to contribute to a body of scientific knowledge in the field.

Admission requirements

  • Master of Science degree in agronomy, crop/plant physiology, soil science, horticulture or other related fields (climatology, agroeconomics, crop protection, etc) from a recognized and accredited institution of higher learning.

  • Candidates requesting for admission from fields other than agronomy may be required to take additional courses to compensate for the deficiencies as per the recommendation of the Department Graduate Committee (DGC).

  • Candidates have to submit concept note on current agricultural issues.

  • There will be a personal interview and discussion.

Graduation requirements

Eligibility for graduation is governed by the provision set by the UOG senate legislation. The

requirements among others include:

a) Successful completion of a minimum of 12 Credit hours of course work.

b) Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct research independently: completion of PhD

thesis and successful defense

c) a candidate needs to obtain a minimum CGPA of 3.00 without ‘C’ grade and below

d) A minimum grade of C (pass/satisfactory) for the PhD thesis and defense
