Background
Horticulture sector in Ethiopia has a high potential for domestic, regional and international markets, but that substantial coordinated efforts and investments by both public and private sectors parties are required to actually realize these potentials. There is shortage of Horticulture professionals in the labor market. The country’s future development strategy focuses on the efficient and effective mobilization and utilization of agricultural resources. As a result of recurrent drought in the country from time-to-time Ethiopia is facing repeated malnutrition problems occasioned by unstable food crops production. In order to tackle the problem, the current Horticulture development strategy of the country and development of the sector calls for the need to train more skilled professionals and experts to utilize the rich Horticultural potential of the country. Department of Horticulture in BSc program at university of Gondar has opened in 2014/15 academic year with 68 students and MSc program in Horticulture has opened during 2016/2017 academic year with 6 students. Five batches in BSC degree and 4 batches in MSc degree has been graduated by the department for the last 8 and 6 years, respectively.
